My husband and I have loved shepherds for years, but I must admit that it all started with him. He had previously owned retired police dogs for personal protection. These shepherds and their great love and devotion to him, fostered the love of the real working German Shepherd. And so we strive to continue to breed these same loyal protectors that serve our country so bravely.
From our first shepherd until now we have always wanted first and foremost a loyal companion and protector for our children. And our first German Shepherd was bought with that purpose in mind.
Years later we find ourselves in the unique opportunity to breed some fantastic dogs that we can now share with the public. Our primary goal being to bring to you the public, dogs that will make you and your family feel loved and protected. I did not acquire my first shepherd until I was an adult but as they say "if I knew then what I know now" I could have had so many more years of enjoyment from such a great breed.
Before shepherds I had no idea the potential that they held, their amazing ability to learn anything that you could imagine to teach them, their incredible drive to not only play, but love and faithfully protect you. And as much as a cliche as it sounds they are truly man's best friend and you will find none more loyal then the German Shepherd.
So now that we are absolutely hooked on the Shepherd we wanted the same great dogs for other people and strive to give people the same loyal and trustworthy companion that the shepherd is so well known for. We have slowly grown our business to include some nice females and our stud dog Ari von Neuer Monde. Before dogs I was a professional Quarter Horse Trainer and traveled the Quarter Horse Show Circuit. These 15 years of professional horse training, taught me many things about training animals and much of the information relates the same to dogs as with horses.
The name Neuer Monde in German means new moon. And it represents for me a new beginning, and finding myself again after a career ending back injury. I fell in love with the German Shepherd, and realized once again how much we need the love and companionship of animals in our lives.
We take raising Shepherds seriously!
We are members in good standing of the American Kennel Club, United Kennel Club, Canadian Kennel Club. We adhere to the AKCand The German Shepherd Dog Club of America's, Breeder's Code of Ethics.
We believe that the true German Shepherd is the Shepherd that the founder of the breed, Captian Max von Stephanitz created. We do our best to follow in his vision of creating a dog that can work and serve his family as well as adhering to the standard set forth by him back in the 1920's. We believe that the generations of careful breeding and strict adherence to the standard set forth by Stephanitz, that the Germans have followed is best left alone.
This means we do not breed or have in our lines any American line show dogs. All of our dogs can be directly linked to the foundation German stud dogs that began the breed. We feel that the sloping top line and rear angulations that has been created by the American show breeders is a serious fault to the breed and has caused many years of pain and anguish to our wonderful Shepherd. I hope to see a day soon when this will no longer be accepted, and our Shepherds will once again be healthy and long lived companions. I have added some photos for reference in the education tab to give you a better idea of the difference between American show line shepherds and the shepherd that Max von Stephanitz originally created.
We also believe that no dog should ever be bred before the age of two. And that every dog bred should have proven themselves before ever being considered worthy of having a litter. That means they should have at least the following; hips certified by OFA, PennHip, or a German rating. (preliminary x-rays, are not a certification of hips and should not be used as such)
We do not make a breeding with our dogs unless we have deposits on at least four puppies, this insures that there is a demand. To continue breeding dogs and producing puppies when you have no demand for them is another way of contributing to the mass of unwanted dogs.
They should have earned titles in at least the AKC obedience ring, German sport of Schutzhund or currently working in a civil ability such as police work, therapy or search and rescue.
Every dog should have a stable and sound temperament that is a compliment to the breed. They should be stable in public, gentle around children and maintain a calm and loyal character at all times.
If the dog does not have all of the above they are not worthy of being bred and doing so would not help better the breed. And in doing so a breeder would be adding to the already depressing amount of unwanted dogs that plague our shelters and human societies. Buyers who continue to support breeders who do not have these standards are also promoting the levels of unwanted dogs.
We believe that the German Shepherd is the best all-around dog and love them dearly. But we know that they need love, exercise and devotion. If you are not willing to train, socialize and exercise your dog, please look to another breed. But if you are willing to take on this commitment, know that you will be rewarded ten-fold with a dog so devoted and in love with you, you will never choose any other breed again.

"I have known Shelby Dean since she came to the Grand Traverse Area approximately 8 years ago. As I have gotten to know her through our mutual love of the German Shepherd breed I have observed that Shelby demonstrates a high level of integrity in both her personal and professional lives. She has a broad knowledge base in both the breeding and training of German Shepherd Dogs. Shelby has high standards for breeding and is knowledgeable about what genetic lines are best crossed. She researches and seeks the best in temperament and conformation in addition to strong drives. She is committed to maintaining the integrity of this most wonderful breed of dogs. Shelby has trained several of her own and others dogs bring them to title. She has knowledge and interest in several areas and is pursuing a broad scope of training areas including schutzhund, therapy dog, and AKC obedience and tracking. She has also taught local puppy obedience classes. Shelby's own dogs are well loved, well trained, family members, raised with children and exhibit the true flexibility and stability for which this breed is known/ I highly recommend Shelby Dean as both a trainer and breeder."
